During this uncertain time of the coronavirus pandemic, I wanted to share some valuable and scientifically-backed information about Peppermint Tea and Essential Oil.

Drink Peppermint Tea for health

Many of you may not know that I'm not only a real estate agent that loves to help people however I can, but also I'm an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Certified Natural Health Professional. And a lover of Peppermint tea and essential oils. For years I've used this oil, but now very purposefully employing them to create a cleaner environment in my body and home for myself and my family.

As I type this, my diffuser is on my desk spewing out these magical droplets of antiviral goodness and filling me with energy. :)

In an article about Peppermint Tea on the Taste of Home website, the author lists 5 benefits of Peppermint Tea including it's antiviral properties (scientifically backed in this article from PubMed), antibacterial properties and it's ability to boost your energy. On a daily basis, I often drink peppermint tea for it's delicious flavor and energizing effects. But today the antiviral aspect is near and dear to my heart as we go through this world-wide pandemic. Whether it could cure a person or not is not the question: it is a small step anyone can take in proactively protecting themselves against any virus. Peppermint oil has even been found effective on the herpes simplex virus!

The author of the Taste of Home article goes into detail in this excerpt:

Peppermint tea and it's antiviral properties

What Are the Benefits of Peppermint Tea?

Here’s what research about peppermint from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has revealed:

  1. It has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Peppermint has shown to have significant antiviral and antibiotic properties, helping to support your body’s immune system. This is why peppermint tea can be a great addition to treating things like the common cold.
  2. It helps out with mental clarity. Peppermint has been found to aid in performance for complex tasks and help ease mental fatigue. That makes a cup of tea a great choice for an afternoon pick-me-up!
  3. A cup of tea can eases tummy troubles. Due to the relaxing effects peppermint has on the gut, its tea makes a great remedy for nausea and abdominal pain.
  4. It contains antioxidant power. Chock full of phytochemicals like vitamins and minerals, peppermint has strong antioxidant properties that help strengthen your body’s immune system.
  5. It helps relieve headaches. Menthol, an active ingredient in peppermint, has been shown to be a safe and effective remedy for headaches and migraines. In addition to peppermint tea, try applying peppermint essential oil to your temples and forehead for relief.

How can you use Peppermint Essential Oil and Tea?

Peppermint Essential Oil

Here are some suggestions from me to you on how you can use this oil to boost your health. You can buy a high quality Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil here and have it delivered to your door.

  1. Open the bottle and just take a whiff...already, by just breathing in, the antiviral properties start to work in your nasal passages. I often keep it in an inhaler to smell when I'm flying, heading into public places with crowds, or if I've been around someone who is possibly contagious. And I can confirm that I don't often get sick.
  2. If it's high quality, pure and therapeutic-grade essential oil, simply put a few drops into hot water and drink it like a tea. This has been shown to help with digestion as mentioned above.
  3. Rub it on the inside of your wrists for energy and cooling effect, as well as the back of your neck. This can help with tension in the neck. Careful to then wash your hands--peppermint oil in the eye is not something you want!
  4. Rub one drop into the temples, toward the hairline to help with headaches. Again, be careful to not get too close to the eyes.
  5. Drink peppermint tea to energize yourself in the afternoon. You can drink peppermint tea hot, especially in the winter, and keep it on hand as a refeshing cold iced tea in the summer! Throw a few sprigs of fresh mint in for an extra burst of flavor.
  6. Diffuse the oil in your home for an energetic and cleansing effect. It's not recommended to do this at bedtime as it may energize you while you're trying to sleep :).
  7. According to the PubMed article cited above, peppermint oil can be effective on the herpes virus. So taken internally helps, but also dabbing a drop of the oil onto a fever blister or putting in into coconut oil and then applying to the cold sore may not only give a feeling of pain relief, but also may help it heal faster. As quoted in the PubMed article: Considering the lipophilic nature of the oil which enables it to penetrate the skin, peppermint oil might be suitable for topical therapeutic use as virucidal agent in recurrent herpes infection.

So for today, you may be stuck inside and feel helpless against our current situation in the world due to the spread of the coronavirus and other viruses. But you can take small steps to be proactive with your health and home. I hope this has been helpful for you. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below or contact me directly!
